The same happens with other stores’ shelves, iphones, imacs, drones, this year robots to turn off lights and switch on computers, and the dilemma of what to buy this year for Christmas... Sidetracking a little bit a personal story comes to my mind. Some years ago, when my little daughter turned 13 I became so sad because I realized I didn’t know what to buy for her birthday. There was nothing she had been wishing for, so anything I’d buy it would never convey her expectation for happiness. She was already catered with everything, needs and fancies, mobiles, ipads, super expensive branded-named running shoes - I always wondered why a pair of any running shoes should cost 150€ if they are not meant to do any sport but a normal walk. “Fake postureo” is the answer, my daughter said. That year, after buying something I don’t remember what to my daughter I forced the complete family to go to have a Christmas walk round some of the disadvantaged areas in Barcelona, where we could see lots of children wearing their everyday clothes and their very ordinary and worn off running shoes and doing their normal routines on Christmas day. It’s true that I went on buying consumer items but that year there was a click in my mind regarding presents and shopping. This is not an article against consumerism. All the contrary, I love iphones, ipads and imacs, I consume the three of them but maybe for Christmas something more emotional and easy to share could be more interesting.
