Culture of peace: Federico Mayor Zaragoza
Federico Mayor Zaragoza was born in Barcelona. Doctor of Pharmacy from the Complutense University of Madrid and Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Granada, where he was formerly Rector. Co-founder of the Severo Ochoa Centre for Molecular Biology.
Among other political responsibilities, he has held the posts of Undersecretary of Education and Science of the Spanish Government, Member of the Spanish Parliament, Advisor to the President of the Government, Adolfo Suárez, Minister of Education and Science and Member of the European Parliament. In 1987 he was elected Director-General of UNESCO and re-elected in 1993 for a second term.
He is Director of the Scientific Council of the Ramón Areces Foundation, President of the Culture of Peace Foundation, Co-President of the University Institute of Human Rights, Democracy and Culture of Peace and Non-violence (DEMOSPAZ) and President of the Spanish Association for the Advancement of Science.
