TIME, AGAIN

Dear all again,

If you happened to have read my

last article, you may remember

it ended with the word

Time

in

capitals. And if you read the other

articles by now you’ve noticed I have

a little obssession with words. Why

do words become what they are and

how?.

This

Time

I amspecifically interested

in the word

TIME

, how useful it has

become and how hateful sometimes.

There are endless expressions with

the word

Time

in, “It’s

time

, it’s

high

time

, kill

time

, waste

time

, to

be behind the

times

...”.

Some societies like ours value

Time

as much as Gold, others, more

practical like the Saxon, say “

Time

is Money”. And normally when we

don’t have more

TIME

, we die”. How

terrible can

time

be!.

But the question is when did

time

begin having the meaning of

time

?.

According to the New Oxford

American Dictionary,

Time

is “the

indefinite continued progress of

existence and events in the past,

present, and future regarded as a

whole”.

It seems the word

TIME

dates back

to the 13th-14th century and comes

from the Old English tima “limited

space of

time

” which had evoluted

from”tide”meaning “cut or divide”.

But when did

Time

become this

horrible monster who is always

keeping us repeating the words “I

don’t have

time

”. We don’t visit our

families because we don’t have

time

,

we don’t cook like our mummies

because we don’t have

time

, we

don’t do sport, we don’t make love,

we don’t, we don’t, because we don’t

have

time

.
