Since I read Alice in Wonderland that I

remember the white rabbit running and

saying

“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too

late!”

. If you readGulliver Travels by Jonathan

Swift you’ll remember the Lilliputians think

Gulliver’s watch is God because he does not

do anything without consulting first

“The

tiny Lilliputians surmise that Gulliver’s

watch may be his god, because it is that

which, he admits, he seldom does anything

without consulting.”

According to Adam Westbrook in his Fusion

channel, everything started in 1657, the year

you could have coffee for the first

time

in

Paris, or chocolate in London. It was when

the

balance spring

was invented, so if you

gave it a push it didn’t stop moving, exactly

the same as

Time

. Suddendly and by accident

the human being found a way to measure

something up to then ephimeral. It was the

beginning of the clock, and by mechanizing

time

, we accidentalymechanized

us

. And

when the clocks became smaller,

time

started following us everywhere.Watches

became an essential object in our wrists.

Well, first maybe in our vest-pockets and now

although still on us, in our mobiles, tvs and

endless gadgets. They became ornaments,

accessories, even jewels, and symbols of

status, you’ve probable heard about the

meaning of having a Rolex in the corporate

ladder.People wear luxury watches to show

other people that they are successful.People

wear luxury watchesto send a subconscious

signal to their partners.

Since then, whe don’t eat when we are hungry

but when it’s

time

to eat, we sleep when it’s

time

to sleep. Our work can be measured but

productivity and hours, these little pieces in

which

time

is broken up. Of course, in the

past there existed sand clocks but that was a

completely new understanding of the world.

Another eternal question I had about

Time

was: why is it that we have different

Time

zones in the world? and the answer again

goes back to the clock.

The

expansion

of

transport

and

communication during the 19th century

created a need for a unified

time

-keeping

system.

So, as you can see

Time

and Clocks are

constantly ruling our lives. Fortunately there

are nice

Times

like the ones shortly coming,

Christmas

Time

. A

Time

for generosity and

sharing, a

Time

for forgivingand loving.Don’t

forget the clock will also be present at 12:00

pmO’clock on New Year’s Eve telling us when

to eat our grapes. By the way, did you know

that this

O

’clock was said to differenciate

the precise

time

of a real clock from the still

existing and non-precise sundial?. So people

in the 17th century would say things like “It’s

six of the clock”.

But now, I run out of

Time

and I cannot go

without wishing youa very Happy New Year

and Merry Christmas

Time

to you all.
